Our Review

The Stones awoke with a start from their psychedelic dream, both musically and spiritually. Beggars Banquet is the sound of that start, a decisive move toward their roots that would color the next five or so gloriously creative years. The record is best known, of course, for the brazen statements "Sympathy for the Devil" and "Street Fighting Man," but its skepticism and humor pervade nearly every cut. "No Expectations" is more proof of Jagger and Richards' ability to deliver heartrending ballads, while a cover of the Rev. Robert Wilkins' "Prodigal Son" shows how commandingly they'd mastered pre-electric blues. Even at its lightest, this is tough, smart music that remains endlessly listenable and challenging. Those wondering how they got to be called the greatest could begin learning the lesson here.

Customer Reviews

Beggars Banquet a delicious board of fare (5 stars) Fed-up with their attempts to pace every trend set by The Beatles, Beggars Banquet was a return by the Rolling Stones to do what they have always done best-blues influenced rock 'n roll. Brian Jones was primarily responsible for steering the band back to it's Delta blues roots, after the abortive attempt on "Their Satanic Majesty's Request" to match The Beatles psychedelia of "Sgt. Peppers" and "Magical Mystery Tour. Let's Drink To The Salt Of The Earth (5 stars) This was the last album completed by the original line up and started a string of releases unmatched by any other artist. "Sympathy for the Devil" is lyrical perfection, "Street Fighting Man" is a classic rock song, with no electric guitars. "No Expectations" is a beautiful ballad with Brian Jones on slide guitar. On this album the group went back to their roots and if you want to know why the Stones are cons Rock & Roll at it's best (5 stars) Not only one of the greatest stones albums of all time. One of the greatest albums of all time. From Sympathy For The Devil to Salt Of The Earth, This is why they are the greatest rock & roll bands in the world...

Biography

Formed: April, 1962 in London, England Genre: Rock Years Active: '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s By the time the Rolling Stones began calling themselves the World's Greatest Rock & Roll Band in the late '60s, they had already staked out an impressive claim on the title. As the self-consciously dangerous alternative to the bouncy Merseybeat of the Beatles in the British Invasion, the Stones had pioneered the gritty, hard-driving blues-based rock & roll that came to define hard rock. With his preening machismo and latent maliciousness, Mick Jagger became the prototypical rock frontman,...
