Our Review

This album is Mastered for iTunes. Madman Across the Water is a peak of Elton John's early singer/songwriter days. It certainly captures the mood of 1971 pop, from its introspection and storytelling to its mock blue-denim jacket design. The record is best known for "Tiny Dancer," the lush ode to lyricist Bernie Taupin's wife Maxine that gained new life after its inclusion in Cameron Crowe's film Almost Famous. But the densely orchestrated single "Levon" is also here, as are the more rocking "Razor Face" and the miserable-sounding "Goodbye." Madman was John's fifth album release in little more than a year, but at this point in his career, he could keep up the pace: Honky Chateau and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road were still to follow.

Customer Reviews

Great Work (4 stars) Elton John's albums, in the order I bought them: Tumbleweed Connection, Madman and then Yellowbrick Road. Yellow Brick Road is EJs "The Wall", a very defining piece of work for the time it was released. (he has changed, too!) Madman to me is a singular work ,it stands apart from the "Your Song" type of music and is not quite as unique as Tumbleweed Connection. Two of the songs, Levon and Tiny Dancer were, in the One of Elton's Finest (5 stars) Easily, one of Elton's finest albums. The title track is his best work. Teamed with the brilliant arranger, Paul Buckmaster, the level of genius displayed here allows this album to hold up not only well, but for the ages.
